Paul,

Your song Life and Death means so much to me, but I can't exactly place it. I realize there are endless places I could be associating it, but here's where it is in my life right now. My wife passed away from a mental illness in 2014 leaving behind me and our 15 month old daughter. It only takes the first few chords and I start tearing and choking up. I think of the love we had, all the pain she had, how she fought to the best of her God given abilities, how ineffective the doctors were, what little consolation our daughter and I were, and ultimately the tragic ending. Life and Death is a conduit for my grief. Life and Death is a conduit for our love, something tangible to embrace. Thank you.

Love,

Peter

I appreciate you sharing this deeply personal experience with me. I am so very sorry for your loss. You are the only one who truly understands what it's like to walk in your shoes. "Life & Death" is a basic theme written by Michael Giacchino for the TV Show LOST. It was less than a minute long. As I was waiting for a heart transplant in 2009 I watched the show. My brother, who suffered from mental illness, passed away tragically while I waited for my heart. (He was not able to donate his organs). After I survived, I took Michael's basic theme and developed it into a full length song, which is what you've heard. I'm amazed by how powerful music is and it's ability to speak to our hearts. May the music continue to be a voice and hopefully give you comfort. God bless! -Paul Cardall
